Thesis proposal IFPEN/LMPS on model reduction for geometrical nonlinear problems – application to mooring lines for floating offshore wind turbines

Dear colleague,

Please find attached a proposal for a PhD position on the «Model reduction for the design of steel wire ropes in the mooring line of a floating wind turbine», for a start on November 4, 2025.

This thesis will be supervised by Pierre-Alain Guidault, David Néron and Pierre-Alain Boucard on the LMPS side and Martin Guiton on the IFPEN side.

The position will be affiliated with the Ecole normale superieure Paris-Saclay of Paris-Saclay University (12th worldwide by current Shanghai rankings, 1st in continental Europe) and IFPEN.
IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN) is a major research and training player in the fields of energy, transport and the environment.

This is an IFPEN funding which corresponds to the high salary range of a doctorate in France. The salary includes paid leave, working time recovery days and social insurance plan.

Profile and skills required :
  • Nonlinear computational mechanics,
  • Finite element methods, numerical methods for partial differential equations,
  • Computational contact mechanics.
  • Knowledge in beam theory and model reduction, as well as in programming languages such as Matlab or Python, and Abaqus software would be appreciated.

No knowledge of French is required (all work can be done in English).

Complete details and info on how to apply can be found here:

Feel free to forward this proposal to any Master student or collaborator who may be interested.
